Adult ADHD
What if your anxiety and depression aren’t the whole story?
Sometimes anxiety and depression aren’t the whole story. They can be signs of an underlying struggle, like untreated ADHD..
ADHD isn’t always obvious hyperactivity or an inability to sit still. For many people, especially adults, it can look more like:
• Constantly feeling overwhelmed
• Procrastinating even when something is important
• Difficulty starting or finishing tasks
• Forgetfulness and losing things
• Trouble keeping up with responsibilities
• Getting frustrated or overwhelmed easily
• Feeling like everyday life takes more effort than it should
Over time, those struggles can take a toll.
When you’re constantly falling behind, forgetting things, missing deadlines, or wondering why seemingly simple tasks feel so difficult, it can create chronic stress and anxiety.
Over time, struggling with things that seem to come easily to everyone else can wear on your confidence and contribute to feelings of depression.
This is one reason ADHD can sometimes be missed. A person may seek help for anxiety or depression without realizing that untreated ADHD could be contributing to both.
That doesn’t mean everyone with anxiety or depression has ADHD, or that ADHD is always the cause. But when symptoms continue despite treatment, or there has been a lifelong pattern of difficulty with attention, organization, impulsivity, or executive functioning, it may be worth looking a little deeper.
Sometimes anxiety and depression are only part of the bigger picture.
